Verse 52

His disciples said to him, “Twenty-four prophets have spoken in Israel and they have all spoken of you.” He said to them, “You have disregarded the living one among you and have spoken of the dead.”

On the surface, this saying may seem to be a curious response to the recognition being spoken by the disciples; to say that all the prophets have spoken of Yeshua reflects that they are realizing that he is the Messiah, the most holy Anointed One of God. Yet he says to them, “You have disregarded the living one and have spoken of the dead.”

It must first be understood that a living apostle, prophet, tzaddik—let alone the Messiah—is not justified or validated by those who have gone before them. Their anointing and divine authority and power do not come from men or women, however holy they may be. Instead, it comes from the Holy One and Holy Shekinah, the Holy Spirit. What they are is from God and God alone, no other. Even if a holy man, woman, or angel was sent to initiate them and speak the word of the Holy One to them, it is God’s doing, an action of the presence and power of God, the Holy Spirit.

In the midst of the manifestation of the Living Presence of the Eternal One or in the presence of a living revelation and realization of the Eternal One, why look elsewhere, to the past or to the future? Why remove yourself from the present and the Divine Presence with you in this moment, this very day? The place or event of revelation and realization of the Eternal One, Eternal Now, is in the present—in the moment, here and now. For those present in what is happening with faith, love, and inward cleaving, revelation and realization—enlightenment—is always transpiring from moment to moment.

Curiously enough, much of religion is always oriented to the past and the dead. Even if a living messenger is encountered—an apostle, prophet or tzaddik, assuming the living messenger is recognized as such—most religious seekers will have greater veneration for and devotion to those of the past than the living one. You see, one can make realized beings of the past say or be whatever one wants. One can also interpret their teachings and word of God spoken however one wishes because that one does not encounter the direct intensity of their presence and the knowledge and power of God that was in them. In the presence of a living messenger, however, one must deal with their divinity and humanity—the reality of a divine-human—and take direction or correction from them. There is no making them be, say, or do anything that the Holy One, Holy Shekinah does not call them to be, say, or do, not in the least. Generally speaking, the dead tend to be comforting to us early on the path, and the living tend to be troubling. The dead are easier for us to love in the way they love as we are in ourselves, in the flesh.
